How we started Desert Healing and Pelvic Health

Desert Healing and Pelvic Health

Kristen and I met working at an outpatient clinic in Tucson, AZ. We bonded through our playful energy, sexual humor, and burning desire to help humans struggling with pelvic health issues. We both strongly believe in de-stigmatizing pelvic and reproductive health. Pelvic pain, urinary /fecal incontinence, constipation, sexual dysfucntion, pain with sex, etc., is not exactly dinner table conversation, but it is for us. Our relationship flourished while we worked together. I say humbly that we both tend to be very vibrant, optimistic, humorous, & kind; when we are together we so effortlessly, constructively, & beautifully raise each other’s vibrations ten fold.

We decided we felt burnt out working in an outpatient setting and felt inspired by other pelvic health practitioners who had started their own practice. Pelvic Health PT is very niche & intimate, and it would sometimes feel deconstructive in an outpatient setting. We felt like we didn’t have enough time or space to give the wholehearted care we so desperately wanted our patients to receive. When we could not do it any longer, we sat down at the kitchen table, grabbed each other’s hand, and took the leap into starting our own practice.

I picked the name Desert Healing and Pelvic Health, because I a) thought it sounded calming b) we live in the heart of the Sonoran Desert - Tucson, AZ - and c) personally I felt that through my own emotional rehabilitation journey, the desert has provided so much healing for me. I owe a lot of that healing to Kristen.

I often get emotional thinking about how grateful I am for Kristen. More than a best friend and a business partner, Kristen has been an integral part of my own healing journey. As someone with severe relational trauma, Kristen poured into my soul so much compassion, support, understanding, patience, & unconditional love. The platonic intimacy we share has been one of the keys to unlocking & dissolving so much guarding, distrust, and pain I held around personal relationships. Kristen showed me it’s safe to get close. We can rupture and repair. Hold boundaries and uplift. We are each other’s #1 fan.

So we did the thing! We built a website, got an LLC, got a bank account, a CPA, lawyers, operating agreements, and bought all the supplies we needed. We met with the owner of Rooted, the most wonderful integrative wellness center, and expressed our love for her and her space and how we would love to be a part of it. Typically I take several weeks to make big decisions like this, but - at that very moment - the owner expressed we’d be a great fit, and my body filled with warm, gooey excitement and joy. It just felt right. This was it.

So here we are now. Two young, female business owners treating lovely humans with pelvic and abdominal health concerns. It feels surreal when I think about it, and I’m really proud of us for building realities beyond our wildest dreams.

If you or know someone who may struggle with bowel, bladder, sexual dysfunction, pelvic/abdominal issues, pregnancy/post partum concerns, please consider seeing a pelvic health PT. If you’re in Tucson, AZ, please feel free to visit our website Desert Healing and Pelvic Health. Reach out if you need anything at all.

Xx,

Dr. Laura

p.s. I’d like to add a couple thank you’s to those who have supported us along the way

Sarah… Thank you so much for creating such a beautiful wellness center. This is literally my dream to work in a wellness community doing what I love everyday. Thank you for being so patient, kind, generous, humorous, supporting, calming, and joyful. I have so much love and adoration for you, and I am so grateful for you and all that you have created.

My Therapist… My mentor and guide. The care, gratitude, love, and unconditional adoration I have for you is insurmountable. You inspired me to start my own practice seeing how successful you were with your own. You gave me the courage I needed to believe in myself. You shone bright light on my deepest darkest shadows that were pulling me back from living my truest, most authentic, beautiful life. You helped me find my confidence and strength. I’ve never felt so sure of myself before; I've never loved myself so much before. Your ability to be powerful + boundaried, gentle + kind has inspired me to do the same. Thank you so much for helping me create such a beautiful existence.

Dad… Thank you for always telling me to never depend on a man and that I can be anything I want to be. Thank you for supporting me through higher education. Without your support I wouldn’t be able to follow my dreams and I am so unbelievably grateful for you!

Kristen… Thanks for trusting me with your social security number and thank you for doing far more laundry than I do. There is no other human on this earth I would rather start a business with. I love you so much buddy.

Laura… I am so proud of you. Thank you for always being there for me and putting me first. You are my favorite person to be around. I love you unconditionally, always.
